Why Join Toastmasters
In all aspects of our lives the ability to communicate effectively is a skill devoutly to be desired, because the better you are understood the less Confusion reigns. We also cannot forget communication's faithful companion and that is listening. At a toastmasters club you are afforded the opportunity to develop both skills. We also will throw in the opportunities to develop leadership skills and to meet new people.
I had a profound fear of speaking before small informal groups up to large formal settings. It all terrified me, yet I had deep abiding desire to share my thoughts with others without the pitfalls of a small riot of butterflies breaking out in my stomach. I heard of toastmasters in my senior year of college but it was not until later on in my professional career that I was confronted with the need to develop effective public speaking skills or change careers, so I took a chance and attended a meeting.
My first meeting was initially a bit intimidating because everyone was speaking well and there was a camaraderie amongst the members that I not yet a part of. However, to ease any discomfort I may be experiencing a member of the club was seated next to me and sharing with me what was going on during the meeting and answering any questions I had. The rest, as they say, is history. I joined the club and have not looked back. In fact, I stayed in my profession and have thrived, which I directly attribute to the skills developed as a toastmaster.
It may sound pollyannish but I assure you it is derived from the fact that there are not many places that afford you an opportunity to fail in the interest of learning. At a job if you fail that may be the end of that employment. We provide a safe environment to develop speaking skills.
Our meetings are open, so feel free to check us out and please note there is no fee for visiting our club.
